The Brandeis University baseball team achieved a significant milestone this week, securing its first series win over Emory University since the University Athletic Association transitioned to on-campus series in 2017. The Judges triumphed 7-5 in the series finale on April 26, bolstered by a strong performance from sophomore 3B Ben Kuja, who scored after drawing a walk in the first inning. Brandeis rallied from an early deficit, with key contributions from junior CF Connor Crowley and sophomore 1B Danny Tambascia, who helped the team take the lead in the fourth inning. Earlier in the series, Brandeis split the opening doubleheader, winning 7-0 in the second game after falling 2-0 in the first. Junior Dimitri Skourides pitched a complete-game shutout in that victory, striking out six and allowing just four hits.
In softball, Brandeis faced a challenging week, beginning with a doubleheader against #12-ranked Tufts, where they lost 4-2 and 14-9. The Judges showed resilience, however, sweeping a doubleheader against Case Western Reserve University on April 25, winning 8-4 in the opener and dominating 21-5 in the second game. Junior Katie Baydian made a notable defensive play with an unassisted double play in the first game, while the team’s offensive explosion in the second game featured contributions from multiple players. Unfortunately, the Judges could not complete a series sweep, falling 11-1 in the final game against Case Western Reserve on April 26.
The Brandeis track and field teams had a successful outing at the UAA Outdoor Championships, held at Case Western Reserve. Junior Hugh Licklider won the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 9:13.37, marking him as a conference champion and potentially qualifying him for the NCAA Championships. The women’s team currently stands in fifth place with 34.5 points, while the men are in sixth with 15 points after Day 1 of the meet. The championships continue, providing further opportunities for the Judges to excel in their respective events.
