Lafayette College's softball team concluded its season with a historic appearance in the Patriot League Tournament, marking its first entry since 2012. The Leopards opened the tournament on May 7 against Boston University, where they initially surged to a 3-0 lead before ultimately falling 7-3. Senior Kylee Sweet stood out with a 3-for-4 performance, validating her All-Patriot League selection. In the second round, Lafayette faced Colgate and again started strong, scoring four runs in the first inning. However, they could not hold the lead, succumbing to a 10-5 defeat, which ended their tournament run. Sweet and fellow senior Marisa Powell earned spots on the All-Patriot League Tournament Team, with Sweet leading the team in batting average and Powell excelling as a pitcher throughout the season.
In baseball, three Leopards received Academic All-Patriot League honors: senior pitcher James Reese, junior catcher Brandon Doubek, and senior infielder Matt Colella. Reese, who posted a 3.81 GPA while making 19 appearances on the mound, was joined by Doubek, who batted .308 and maintained a 3.39 GPA, and Colella, who recorded a .293 average with a 3.61 GPA. This recognition highlights Lafayette's commitment to academic excellence alongside athletic performance.
On the tennis front, junior Derrin Lerner showcased his dual commitment to athletics and academics. A chemical engineering major, Lerner balances his studies with his responsibilities on the men’s tennis team and his role as president of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. His reflections on discipline and time management underscore the challenges faced by student-athletes. As the season wraps up, the Leopards look forward to future competitions and continued academic success.
