The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team captured the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title with a decisive 69-58 victory over top-seeded Cal Lutheran on March 1. Caleigh Edwards led the Athenas with an impressive performance, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while going a perfect 14-for-14 from the free-throw line. Earlier in the week, the Athenas staged a thrilling comeback in the SCIAC semifinals, overcoming a 16-point deficit against Pomona-Pitzer to win 59-54, with Edwards contributing 18 points and securing crucial rebounds in the final moments. With this championship, the Athenas are set to compete in the NCAA tournament, marking a significant milestone for the program.
In swimming and diving, Simone Sabeeh showcased her talent at the NCAA Division Region 2 Diving Championships held at Emory University, securing fifth place in the one-meter dive and sixth in the three-meter dive on March 1. Additionally, seven members of the women’s swimming and diving team earned NCAA qualifications, and they will join first-years William Jones and Pierce McShane from the men's team at the NCAA Division III Championships in Indianapolis from March 18-21. This marks a strong showing for CMS swimming as they prepare for national competition.
On the men's side, the Stags basketball team faced a tough loss in the SCIAC semifinals against Chapman, falling 79-68 after the Panthers established an early lead with effective three-point shooting. Despite the setback, the Stags celebrated individual achievements as Cahal Connolly and Will Householter were named to the first team of the All-SCIAC selections, with Reid Jones and Joey Kennedy receiving second-team honors, highlighting a successful season for the program.
