The University of Pennsylvania's men's swimming team is poised for a significant showing at the NCAA Championships this week, with sophomore Watson Nguyen and junior Peter Whittington representing the Quakers. Nguyen qualified for the championships after breaking both the DeNunzio Pool and program record in the 100 breaststroke at the Ivy League Championships, where he also claimed victory in the 200 breaststroke. Whittington, who finished just behind Nguyen in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:52.10, marks the first time since 2016 that Penn has sent a men's duo to the NCAA Championships. Nguyen will begin his competition on Thursday in the 100 breaststroke, followed by both swimmers competing in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday.
In women's basketball, four Quakers have been recognized for their academic achievements by being named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team. Sophomores Ashna Tambe, Katie Collins, Brooke Suttle, and Gabriella Kelley have all demonstrated excellence both on the court and in the classroom. Collins, who led the team in scoring with 13.0 points per game and earned All-Ivy League Second-Team honors, maintained a GPA of 3.67. Tambe, who contributed significantly in her sophomore season, holds a GPA of 3.68. Suttle and Kelley also made notable contributions to the team while balancing their academic responsibilities. This recognition underscores the commitment of Penn athletes to both their sport and their studies.
In addition to these athletic achievements, Penn Athletics has announced a partnership with Onrise, a virtual mental health provider, aimed at enhancing the mental health resources available to its student-athletes. This collaboration will provide peer support, therapy, and psychiatric care tailored specifically for the unique challenges faced by collegiate athletes, furthering the university's commitment to the well-being of its nearly 1,000 student-athletes.
