Senior Art Martinez of Case Western Reserve University has made history by placing sixth in the 133-pound bracket at the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championship held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This achievement not only secures him All-America honors for the first time in his career, but also marks him as the highest placing Spartan wrestler at the national championship since Issac Dukes finished third at 149 pounds in 2011. Martinez, seeded eighth, advanced to the second day of competition after a dramatic first-round victory over ninth-seeded Chance Suddeth from Augsburg, winning 4-1 in sudden victory. He then faced top-seeded Wyatt Unser of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the consolation quarterfinal, where he initially took a commanding lead before ultimately finishing the match with a score of 12-11. Martinez's sixth-place finish is significant as he becomes the program's first All-American in 14 years and the first ever at 133 pounds.
Alongside Martinez, seniors Thomas Wagner and Mathew Gummere also represented Case Western at the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships. The trio secured their spots at the national level by finishing third in their respective weight classes at the regional championships. While Wagner and Gummere did not advance as far as Martinez, their participation highlights the depth of talent within the Spartan wrestling program. The wrestling season has concluded for Case Western, but the program looks forward to building on this success in the coming years.
