The Wesleyan University women's track and field team opened its outdoor season with a commanding performance at the J. Elmer Swanson Spring Classic, held on March 22. Amelia Goettsch '29 highlighted the day by winning the 200m with a time of 25.60 seconds. The team also showcased its strength in the 3000m, where Kaitlyn Connors '29 led a remarkable sweep of the Top 10 finishes, clocking a winning time of 10:08.76. Virginia Lessner '28 followed closely in third place at 10:15.46, with Chase Cerrell '28 and Alexandra Weingard '28 finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. The Cardinals demonstrated their depth, as seven runners finished within the top ten. Elanora Smith '27 also made her mark, placing fourth in the 1500m with a time of 4:47.84, while Katherine Goss '29 and Alyssa Fix '29 added to the team's success with strong finishes in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles.
On the men's side, the Cardinals mirrored their female counterparts with a dominant display at the same event. The men's team swept the Top 10 finishes in the 3000m, led by Dylan Cote '28, who secured first place with a time of 8:31.31. Liam Calhoun '26 also shone, winning the 1500m in 3:57.82, while Alex Kermath '26 and Bruce Lenes '26 rounded out the podium in second and fifth, respectively. The Cardinals' depth was evident as they filled all ten spots in the 3000m, with Knox Wallask '29 and Zach Allen '27 finishing second and third. August Doetsch '29 contributed a third-place finish in the 800m, further showcasing the team's versatility. Both teams will look to build on this strong start as they prepare for upcoming competitions in the outdoor season.
