PRINCETON, N.J. - No. 6 men's crew competed in the Princeton Invitational Saturday at Lake Carnegie in New Jersey, capping off a full day of racing by earning an Ivy League victory against No. 17 Columbia.

"We expected the racing to be challenging in all the races and it was," Men's Crew Norman W. Alpert '80 Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89 said. "Conditions were rough and we made some mistakes in a heavy headwind. In all the boats, we could have been more aggressive without getting rushed."

"We have a lot of work to do. Still, the team has good energy. They are enthusiastic and hard working. We got some wins. We have a lot we can build on."

The Varsity Eight, coxed by Elenna Seguin and stroked by Tom Griffin, began the day in a race against No. 2 California, No. 7 Syracuse, and No. 10 Yale.

At the onset, Brown rowed around the back of the pack with Syracuse. The texture of the water picked up, making for a bumpy course. During the middle portion of the regatta, Bruno increased its pace and surpassed the Orange for third place. After a late push to try and catch second place Yale, the Bears crossed the finish line in 6:13.737 and secured a third place podium finish.

In the afternoon race against Columbia, the Bears got off to a torrid start in the first forty-five seconds and built a half a leg lead. The first 500 meters showcased the crew's power and speed, followed up by a potent middle portion of the race, pulling away from the Lions for a convincing win in 6:12.790.

The Second Varsity, coxed by Jack Mershon and stroked by Eddie Andrews, got off to a strong start in third place, pacing about a quarter length over Yale. Brown held a steady pace throughout, earning a third place podium finish in 6:24.777.

Through flat conditions on the race course in the afternoon, the 2V8 dominated from wire-to-wire, defeating Columbia by over fourteen seconds and finishing the race in 6:11.122.

The Third Varsity, coxed by Rahul Ramakrishnan and stroked by Fraser Burdett, finished in fourth place during their morning race, crossing the finish line in 6:43.333.

In the afternoon, the 3V8 established an early lead in their base cadence and rhythm. Through the first 500 meters, Brown led Columbia by about a boat length. The Lions were able to close the gap in the final 500 meters, but the Bears held on for a strong win after posting a final time of 6:12.410.

The Fourth Varsity, coxed by Adelaide Poulson and stroked by Samuel Loehnis, jumped out to a competitive start in the morning. Utilizing the Bruno Twenty, a strategy that relies on twenty of the hardest, strongest strokes from the crew in the middle of the race to help close the gap, the Bears crossed the finish line in 6:52.753 and locked in a second place finish.

The 4V8 afternoon race saw Bruno get out to a solid pace, moving into second place in the early stages of the regatta. Brown rowed very hard, with Symeon Efstathiou noticeably picking up the pace in around the 1,000 meter mark. The Bears finished the race in 6:16.166, defeating Columbia but falling to the Penn Quakers.
