Rowing teams open spring season on Charles River

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates rowing teams opened the spring season Saturday on the Charles River against the MIT Lightweights and Simmons, battling significant chop as well as their opponents.

The conditions were so rough that the women's fourth varsity eight race, the final one of the day, was canceled.

The Bobcats earned a victory in the women's third varsity eight race, with first-year coxswain

Sophie Shaw (Great Barrington, Mass.) and junior stroke seat

Charlotte Comrack (Washington, D.C.) leading the crew across the finish line in 7:23.350, almost a minute faster than the Simmons 3V, which finished in 8:24.574.

The men's first varsity eight race kicked off the day, with the Bobcats finishing second to the MIT Lightweights in 6:10.872. The women's first varsity eight also finished second to the Engineers, crossing the finish line in 6:59.517.

The men's second varsity eight recorded an impressive time of 6:11.293 in a second-place finish to the MIT Lightweights 2V and the women's 2V finished their race in 7:16.879.

The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday when they compete against Tufts, Wesleyan, Boston College (M) and Wellesley (W) on the Malden River.
