Baseball Shares Regular-Season Title, Locks up Two-Seed After Doubleheader Split with Lehigh; Hosts Navy for PL Semifinal
The Bucknell baseball team became co-regular season champions in the Patriot League and secured the second seed in the conference tournament after splitting a doubleheader with Lehigh at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park on Sunday.

Bucknell won the opening game 2-1 in seven innings to secure a top-two seed in the tournament. The Bison had an opportunity to clinch the one seed, but Lehigh played spoiler in game two with a 10-4 win. Bucknell will host three-seed Navy at Depew Field at Marren Park next weekend for a best-of-three series.
Brady Hoar tossed his sixth quality start of the season as the freshman tossed six innings with just one run on three hits. Hadley Maxwell then came on to close out the game with his league-leading 10th save of the season.
Maxwell's 10 saves this season are one shy of Bucknell's single-season record. His 13 career saves are two short of Bucknell's all-time record.
Zach Selfon had three hits on the day including a two-hit game in game two. Garrett Mathias and Billy Fluharty each had three hits in game two for the Bison. Mathias had three RBIs on the day as the freshman drove in the tying run in game one and had a two-run double in game two.
Bucknell and Navy begin the Patriot League semifinals on Saturday, March 9 at 1:05 p.m. at Depew Field at Marren Park.
Game One: Bucknell 2, Lehigh 1
Bucknell trailed Lehigh 1-0 through the first five innings, but the Bison stormed back with two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead.
Brady Hoar gave the Bison a quality start with six strong innings on the mound before Hadley Maxwell earned his 10th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Bison had just five hits in the game as Lehigh's Sam Fairhurst went five strong innings on the mound. Hoar allowed just a run on three hits in his start for the Bison.
Lehigh opened the scoring in the second inning as an unearned run came home to score. The Bison made two errors in the inning to put a runner on and advance them. The run came home on a fielder's choice hit by Edwin Betances.
Bucknell could not get much momentum going offensively until the sixth inning. The Bison got its first two runners on board in the fifth, but Fairhurst stranded both runners to get out of the jam.
The sixth-inning rally kicked off with a walk by Michael Trommer and a single through the right side by Ty Lagoni put runners on the corners with no outs. Garrett Mathias gave a ball a ride, but it was caught at the warning track allowing the tying run to score. Lagoni stole second and moved to third on a ground ball by Calabrese. Lagoni then came home to score on a wild pitch to take a 2-1 lead.
Hoar got a shutdown inning after taking the lead with two ground outs and a fly out to end his day. Lehigh had a great opportunity in the ninth to tie the game as a lead-off single and a sacrifice bunt moved a runner into scoring position.
Robbie Carvelli singled up the middle, but Andrew Swenson made a sliding play to know down the ball. Swenson picked it up quickly and threw the tying run out at the plate for the second out. Maxwell the struck out the final batter to close out the win.
Game Two: Lehigh 10, Bucknell 4
Lehigh led the Bison 2-1 heading into the sixth inning before the Mountain Hawks exploded for eight runs to break open the game. The Bison scored three runs in a ninth-inning rally, but it was not enough to overcome the big deficit.
The Bison out-hit Lehigh 13-10 in the game, but the Bison stranded 11 baserunners. Lehigh drew seven walks in the game and the Bison drew just two.
Bucknell quickly opened the scoring with a first-inning run as Trommer came in to score on an error. Mathias lined out to the second baseman, but an errant throw in attempt to double up the runner went into the dugout to send Trommer home.
The Mountain Hawks answered immediately with a run in the bottom of the first as Robbie Carvelli scored on a double steal. Lehigh then took the lead in the third inning on an RBI ground out by Aidan Quinn.
The first five batters for Lehigh in the sixth reached base to begin the big rally. The eighth runs came on only eight hits as the Bison surrendered three walks and two hit-batters.
Swenson doubled to lead off the ninth and Billy Fluharty drove him home with a single. The Bison added two more as Mathias doubled down the right field line to make it 10-4 before Lehigh closed out the win.
Tyler Seidman allowed four earned runs on five hits in five innings of work on the mound. Tyler Hawkins and Mikey Myro both came on in relief late in the game to toss scoreless innings. Fluharty and Mathias both had three hits in the game, and Swenson and Selfon each had two.
