Baseball Drops Semifinal Series Opener to Holy Cross

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point Baseball and the Holy Cross Crusaders went back in fourth in Saturday's postseason opener, but the Black Knights would give up a run each in the final two innings to drop game one of the Patriot League Semifinals, 5-3.
The Black Knights must now win each of the final two games of the best of three series.
Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Army got within one run in the home half of sixth and tied it in the seventh. Mason Scott and Thomas Schreck each recorded sacrifice flies for Army to get the game to 3-3, but the Crusaders regained the lead for good an inning later and added an insurance run in the closing stanza.
Army took the lead in the third inning, with Josiah Overbeek leading off the frame with a solo home run to make it 1-0 on his 16th homer of the year.
Holy Cross would tie the game in the fourth on a squeeze bunt and took its first lead in the sixth on a two-run homer.
Multiple times, Army had chances to collect a multi-run innings. It has the bases loaded in the second, but a Zac Farrell hard line drive ended up in the shortstop's glove to end the frame. Then, with two runners on base in the fifth, Schreck just missed a home run with two outs, with the ball falling into the left fielder's glove just underneath the foul pole on the warning track. Army also left runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh inning in which it scored in.
Starting pitcher Andrew Berg pitched 7.1 innings, striking out four batters but taking the decision. He recorded a perfect first inning to get the sizable playoff crowd going at Doubleday Field.
Overbeek entered in relief of Berg in the seventh, recording the final two outs of the eighth and the first in the ninth, before Mark Abell finished the ninth inning.
Army will seek to overcome a 1-0 deficit in the league semifinal series for the fourth straight season.
