Baseball Downs Amherst, Will Face Tufts For Title Game Berth

HARTFORD, Conn. – The East second-seed Trinity College Baseball squad defeated West top-seed Amherst College, 6-3, in the second game of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Semifinals at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium Friday evening. The Bantams rise to 27-11 on the season, while the Mammoths move to 21-14 overall.

What Happened:

• The Bantams came out swinging as Tyler Bernstein laced a leadoff double into the gap, and then scored two batters later on an RBI groundout from Dylan Schnitzer to give Trinity the 1-0 lead in the first inning.

• With the bases loaded and no outs in the third, Dylan Schnitzer ripped a two-run single to right field, followed by an RBI groundout from Andrew Park, to extend the Trinity advantage to 4-0.

• The Mammoths chipped away at the deficit in the top of the fourth with an RBI knock from Aiden Dubetsky to close the gap to 4-1. Amherst added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run home run from Justin Orridge to make it a one run game, 4-3, after three innings.

• Park helped the Bantams maintain their lead with a pair of run-scoring singles in the fifth and seventh innings to send Trinity to the 6-3 victory.

Inside the Boxscore:

• The Bantams plated six runs on 13 hits with two errors, while the Mammoths scored three runs on five hits with an error.

• Schnitzer led the way at the dish, going 4-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Park drove in a trio of runs on two knocks.

• Domizio went 3-for-4, Bernstein had two hits with three runs scored, and Aidan Stern reached base three times and scored twice.

• Andrew Oppenheimer (8-1) delivered eight strong innings on short notice, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts in the win. Tyler Fahey collected his seventh save of the season with a clean ninth inning to preserve the victory.

• The Bantams will return to the diamond tomorrow to face top-seed in the East, Tufts University, with a spot in the Championship Game on the line.
