PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team dropped two games on Sunday for their first Ivy series loss of the season, falling 2-1 in 13 innings in a game that was resumed from Saturday, before dropping Sunday's regularly scheduled game 8-3.
Senior Mika Petersen reached base three times in game two with two hits and a walk, including a three-run homer. Freshman Matt Luigs also had two hits.
GAME 2 (resumed from Saturday)
The second game of the series on Saturday was suspended due to darkness after 12 innings and resumed on Sunday morning. Before stopping on Saturday, freshman Drew Nelson fired 7.0 shutout innings while allowing seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Senior Christian Keel tossed the final 5.0 innings, allowing one run and one hit with five strikeouts.
Brown's defense made several huge plays to keep the game scoreless, including turning three double plays, all of which came on lineouts, and Alex Benevento threw out a runner at third trying to tag up from second.
The Bears finally broke the stalemate in the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Petersen led off with a double off the right field wall and later came in on an RBI groundout by Logan Meusy.
Cornell drew even in the eighth with a one-out walk and double into the right field corner to knot the score 1-1.
After resuming on Sunday, Cornell took advantage of a bloop single, error and a two-out RBI single in the top of the 13th to plate the winning, unearned run.
GAME 3 (Sunday's regularly scheduled game)
After not committing more than three errors in a game all season, Brown made five on Sunday, leading to three unearned runs.
The Big Red put up three runs in the third inning, but Brown answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning, all coming on one big swing from Petersen, who crushed a 2-0 pitch down the right field line for his fourth homer of the season.
Unfortunately for the Bears, those were the only runs they could muster, stranding six runners on base over the final six innings of play. Cornell tacked on a run in the fifth, then three more in the eighth and one in the ninth to put the game away.
ON DECK
Brown will host its final regular season home game on Wednesday afternoon, April 29 when Columbia visits town for an Ivy League matchup. The Bears and Lions have split the first two games of the season series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
