Softball Comeback Bid Falls Short at Cornell on Monday

ITHACA, N.Y. – Brown softball's comeback bid came up short as the Bears fell to Cornell, 8-6, at Niemand-Robison Field on Monday afternoon (April 27). The loss snapped Brown's season-long six-game win streak.

Brown (17-22, 8-9 Ivy) picked up nine hits on the day with two hits coming from both Cameron Zytkewicz Ray and Alyssa Villarde. Villarde and Lilly Burns both hit two-run home runs in the loss. Edie Cobb picked up the loss, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing six runs. Macy Borowski threw 2.1 innings, allowing just two runs.

Cornell (21-22, 8-13 Ivy) started the scoring in the bottom of the second with one run and held the lead until the top of the fourth.

Zytkewicz Ray started the inning with a single and two batters later, Villarde hit a line shot over the fence in left center to put Brown up 2-1. The lead did not last long as Brown surrendered five runs in the bottom of the inning, putting the Bears in a 6-2 hole.

In the top of the sixth, Jasmine Hsiao began a two-out rally with a single to left field. After walks to Maya Choksi and Elli Thompson, Abby Bettencourt singled up the middle to score two runs and cut the deficit in half.

Cornell responded with a single and a home run to start the bottom of the sixth to put Brown in a four-run hole going into the final inning.

The seventh started with a single by Zytkewicz Ray and Burns hit a towering shot over the scoreboard in left field to make it a two-run game again. With one out, Kaicee Klus singled and Hsiao walked to put the tying run on first but a strikeout and groundout ended the game.

Brown continues play on the road, making up a postponed game at Dartmouth on Tuesday (April 28) with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
