BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following impressive performances on the track at the Larry Ellis Invitational last weekend, Skye Chambers and Abigail Ringwood were recognized with Patriot League weekly honors, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Chambers won Patriot League Women's Track Athlete of the Week, while Ringwood was named Rookie of the Week.
A Johns Creek, Ga., native, Chambers set a program record and service academy record in the 800m with a second-place time of 2:02.93. It's the No. 1 time in the Patriot League this season and ranks No. 38 in Division I.
The previous service academy record in the event was set by Gail Conway of Air Force in 1984.
"Skye has made herself into the best 800 meter runner in the history of the service academies," said Director of Track and Field Mike Smith. "Her performance last weekend was a reflection of the talent and fitness that we have seen from her on a daily basis. Things are clicking for her right now and there is more room for growth in the coming weeks as she enters the heart of the NCAA season. She is a tireless worker and a great leader for our team. We are lucky to have her."
Ringwood, a native of Auburn, N.Y., impressed in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing 11th at 10:37.89. Her time is No. 6 all-time at Army in the event, and it's the fifth-best in the Patriot League this season.
"Abigail has been training at a very competitive level this spring and is just now finding her rhythm in the 3000m steeplechase," said Smith. "At the Larry Ellis Invitational last Friday, she ran a smart race and matched her fitness to her performance. She has the right mindset for the steeple. She is fearless, aggressive and willing to learn. She has been working hard to master the technical elements of the steeple and as she improves her hurdling, and her water jump, her performance will improve significantly."
Army is back in action on Thursday, as the Black Knights host the West Point Twilight at Shea Stadium. Competition will get underway at 1 p.m.
