LEWISBURG, Pa.- Alex Polenik continued his successful rookie campaign by winning Patriot League Men's Outdoor Rookie of the Week after his strong performance at the Kehoe Twilight, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the conference office. With his victory, Bucknell has won all three Patriot League awards (Track, Field, and Rookie) for the first time since 2013.
"Alex winning rookie is impressive considering the adversity he has overcome," said throws coach Ryan Protzman. "The Monday after the Bison Outdoor Classic, Alex broke his thumb on his throwing hand. He has been pushing forward and still hitting quality marks in the discus."
Polenik finished third in the discus throw, flinging a best mark of 49.38m (162-0). The rookie fouled in two of his first three attempts but achieved marks in his three final throws. His best distance arrived in the fourth throw and his last two tries topped over 150+ feet.
His award marks the third straight year that a Bison athlete has won Outdoor Rookie of the Week. He is the first thrower to earn the honor since Laddie Trees on April 30, 2012.
Bucknell heads to the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, hosted by Navy, on May 15-16.
