#5 Mammoths Clip Owls' Wings, Fly to 19-5 Win

AMHERST, MA. – Nine different Mammoths found the back of the net as the No. 5 Amherst women's lacrosse team picked up yet another win on Tuesday, April 11. After a big second quarter run sealed a rivalry win over Williams on Saturday, the Mammoths returned home for their final non-conference game of the season. Amherst started the game on the front foot and never let up, as a 7-0 second quarter run fueled them to a 19-5 win.

AMHERST, MA. – Nine different Mammoths found the back of the net as the No. 5 Amherst women's lacrosse team picked up yet another win on Tuesday, April 11. After a big second quarter run sealed a rivalry win over Williams on Saturday, the Mammoths returned home for their final non-conference game of the season. Amherst started the game on the front foot and never let up, as a 7-0 second quarter run fueled them to a 19-5 win.

With the win, Amherst improves to 12-1 overall while the Owls fall to 6-7. The Mammoths will celebrate their senior day at their final home game of the regular season, hosting No. 1 Middlebury on Saturday, April 18. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Mammoths started the game fast, scoring three goals in the first 5 minutes of the contest.

Mia Raven opened the scoring unassisted before

Bridget Finley netted off a Becker helper and

Bridget Darcy continued her hot streak with a goal of her own. They didn't let up after that, with Finley and Darcy each netting another; however, Westfield State potted twice to close out the first quarter with the score sitting at 5-2.

  • The second quarter was all Amherst: Finley secured a hat trick to open the quarter, and

Clara Sosa got her second point of the game with a goal just 30 seconds later.

Caroline Curtis was next, C. Sosa scored her second, and

Emily Petersen got her first of the day, all unassisted. A Petersen free position closed the Mammoth scoring streak, with six goals in 5:39.

Annie Lopez tally closed the run, putting Amherst ahead 12-2 at the half.

  • The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair.

Gabby Sosa put one in the back of the cage to open the second half before the Owls broke their scoreless streak with a marker of their own. G. Sosa responded, whipping a shot into the cage while a woman down. Westfield State would score again, and

Izzie Brabant closed the frame with the Mammoths' 15

th of the day to widen the advantage to 15-4 with 15 minutes to play.

  • G. Sosa sealed her second hat trick of the season with a goal off an assit from Lopez to open the fourth. Curtis, Brabant and C. Sosa put away the other Amherst goals, and a marker from the Owls accounted for the 19-5 final.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Amherst outshot the Owls 40-15 overall and 30-7 in shots on goal on the day.

  • The Sosa sisters both put up 4-point performances, with three goals and an assist each. Finley also recorded a hat trick.

Grace Shannon and the Mammoths had another successful day in the draw circle, winning the battle 20-6. Shannon collected a staggering 9 of those draw controls.

  • Samoska made 1 save,

Jessye Salmon notched 4, and

Marlo Meador also stopped one shot.
