Softball Splits with Amherst in Saturday Doubleheader
The Wesleyan softball team went back out on the road for a Saturday doubleheader at Amherst and the two sides split the twinbill with the Mammoths winning game one 3-0 before the Cardinals answered back with a 6-5 win in game two. Wesleyan improves to 12-9 (4-4 NESCAC) on the season while the Mammoths are 7-9 (3-3 NESCAC).
AMHERST, Mass. – The Wesleyan softball team went back out on the road for a Saturday doubleheader at Amherst and the two sides split the twinbill with the Mammoths winning game one 3-0 before the Cardinals answered back with a 6-5 win in game two. Wesleyan improves to 12-9 (4-4 NESCAC) on the season while the Mammoths are 7-9 (3-3 NESCAC).
Game one was dominated by Amherst starting pitcher Abby Moravek who went the distance for a complete game two-hitter with 13 strikeouts in the 3-0 win. Wesleyan's best chance came in the 1
st when
Molly Lennon '26 led off with a walk before being sacrificed over to second on a
Katie Foley '28 bunt. The bases later loaded with one out but Moravek escaped with a strikeout and inning-ending flyout to center.
Amherst plated a pair of runs in the 2
nd as Abby Rebhan singled to center with the bases loaded to score two. Wesleyan starting pitcher
Ella DeCrescenzo '27 kept the Cardinals in the game, leaving two Amherst runners on in the 3
rd while the Mammoths loaded the bases with one out in the 4
th but couldn't get a run across.
The Cardinals left two runners on in the 5
th, then Amherst added an insurance run on a Lulu Leppard homer to center, before the game ended with two Cardinals left on base in the 7
th.
DeCrescenzo allowed three runs in five innings with three strikeouts while Baker came on and pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the 6
th.
Game two opened with Wesleyan scoring four runs on four hits in the 2
nd as Lennon sent a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run two-out home run. The inning continued with
Rebecca Cassel-Siskind '26 being hit-by-a-pitch then
Cat Palmer '26 came through with an RBI double to center to make it 4-0 Wesleyan.
After two scoreless innings to start play,
Whitney Gigante '28 ran into some trouble in the 3
rd as Amherst scored three runs on five hits. Three RBI singles in the inning scored the runs before Gigante struck out Julia O'Connell with the bases loaded to end the frame.
Wesleyan bounced right back with a two-run 4
th as it was Palmer again who came up with a clutch two-run double out to right center that made it 6-3 Cardinals.
Gigante went back to work, leaving two runners on in the 4
th and 5
th innings, before the Mammoths made it a one-run game with a Moravek two-run double to left center. DeCrescenzo entered in relief and got Jayla Adkins to strike out looking to end the inning.
The score remained 6-5 Wesleyan heading into the bottom of the 7
th when DeCrescenzo needed just eight pitches to retire the side in-order, finishing off the win with her second save of the season.
Palmer went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI while Lennon hit her fifth home run of the season.
Wesleyan is back in action with a Tuesday home doubleheader against Albertus Magnus starting at 3 PM.
