RECAP: 40th Annual Scholar-Champions' Awards Celebration

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis Athletic Department hosted the 40th Annual Scholar-Champions' Award Celebration on Tuesday evening at Edison Theater.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis Athletic Department hosted the 40th Annual Scholar-Champions' Award Celebration on Tuesday evening at Edison Theater.

The awards celebration honors rookies, sophomores, juniors and seniors with performance-based awards as well as several leadership and character awards. Awards were presented by members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Award Definitions and Winners

Stanley & Lucy Lopata Rookie of the Year: This award is bestowed annually to a top female and male freshman student-athlete for their contributions to the athletics program at Washington University.

Female winner: Kate Delia, women's track and field

Male winner: Parker Chan, men's swimming and diving

Carl & Alice Briggson Sophomore Award: This award is bestowed annually to a top female and male sophomore student-athlete for their contributions to the athletics program at Washington University.

Female winner: Olivia Clemons, women's soccer

Male winner: Avi Mahajan, men's tennis

Art & Marge McWilliams Junior Award: This award is bestowed annually to a top female junior student-athlete for their contributions to the athletics program at Washington University.

Winner: Eleanor Archer, women's tennis

Stanley & Ann Rosen Junior Award: This award is bestowed annually to a top male junior student- athlete for their contributions to the athletics program at Washington University.

Winner: Quentin Gomez, men's soccer

William K.Y. & Anne Tao Distinguished Athlete Award: Established in 1989-90, this award is bestowed annually to a top female senior student-athlete for their contributions to the athletics program at Washington University.

Winner: Sam Buckley, volleyball

William H. & Elizabeth Danforth Distinguished Athlete Award: Established in 1989-90, this award is bestowed annually to a top male senior student- athlete for their contributions to the athletics program at Washington University.

Winner: George Bourdier, men's track and field

Mark Edwards Award: An award was created in former men's basketball coach Mark Edwards' name to be presented annually to a male student-athlete who demonstrates the attitude, character and leadership qualities embodied by Coach Edwards.

Winner: Fred Ware, football

Nancy Fahey Award: An award was created in former women's basketball coach Nancy Fahey's name to be presented annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates the attitude, character and leadership qualities embodied by Coach Fahey.

Winner: Eliana Hanna, women' tennis

Iron Bear Award: The Iron Bear Award goes to one female and one male senior or junior student-athlete whose performance in competition reflects the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice they have given to their strength and condition training during their time at WashU.

Female winner: Jenae Bothe, women's track and field

Male winner: Cal L'Hommedieu, men's soccer

The Justin Hardy Courage Award: Presented annually to a student-athlete who demonstrates courage, selflessness, and integrity; contributes to the well-being of others; and, like Justin, inspires others to make a positive impact in our WashU community.

Winner: Yogi Oliff, men's basketball

The Chancellor's Award for Student-Athlete Excellence: The Chancellor's Award for Student-Athlete Excellence was created in 2018 to recognize the student-athlete who has best demonstrated, and been recognized for, Academic Achievement, School and Community Leadership and Athletic Performance.

Winner: Anna Freeman, volleyball
