MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Bates College women's tennis team visited No. 4 Wesleyan University Saturday, suffering a 7-0 road loss to the Cardinals.

The home team claimed the early momentum by sweeping all three doubles matches.

Wesleyan's Leila Epstein and Sarah Youngberg edged

Emelyn Harris and

Iris Westmoreland at the top spot 7-6, while Lara Afolayanka and Agnes Guggenheim prevailed 6-1 against

Isabella Saul and

Grace LaFountain at No. 2. The Cardinals' tandem of Mariia Kornilova and Kendall Smith completed the doubles sweep with a 6-0 win over

Avni Bakre and

Lia Swire at No. 3.

The Cardinals (13-2, 8-0 NESCAC) carried that momentum into singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Guggenheim picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Westmoreland at No. 1 singles, while Afolauanka followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Saul at the No. 2 position.

Youngberg topped Harris 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Kornilova earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Bakre at No. 4. Natalia Leroy defeated Swire 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, and Lucinda Gatsiounis completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 result against LaFountain at No. 6.

Bates (2-13, 1-8 NESCAC) looks to conclude its season on a high note Sunday as the Bobcats visit Connecticut College at 2:00 p.m.
