#18 Women's Lacrosse Bounces Back with 19-6 Win over Saint Benedict

CHICAGO -- The 18th-ranked University of Chicago women's lacrosse team returned to their winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a 19-6 win over the College of Saint Benedict.

CHICAGO -- The 18th-ranked University of Chicago women's lacrosse team returned to their winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a 19-6 win over the College of Saint Benedict.

After back-to-back losses to #3 Tufts and MIT, the Maroons jumped out to a hot start with five straight goals to start the game.

Avery Song and

Wynne Boggan found the back of the net for a quick 2-0 lead in just 80 seconds, and Song added two more goals in the next five minutes before

Charlotte Semlies scored her first for the 5-0 lead.

Following the first goal of the day for the Bennies, the Maroons would score four straight goals to end the quarter to stretch the lead to 9-1. Semlies added her second goal, and

Peyton McGuire,

Sora Choi, and

Rae Hanlon all found the back of the net for the Maroons.

UChicago continued the scoring barrage to start the second period with four more goals from

Grace Hopkins,

Kailee See, Song, and Semlies to stretch the lead to 13-1. The Bennies scored back-to-back goals to end of the half, sending the two teams into the locker room with a 13-3 lead for Saint Benedict.

Following another quick goal for the Bennies to cut the lead to single digits, McGuire and

Elizabeth Fitzgerald scored in the third period to return the game to a running-clock situation with a 15-4 lead at the end of the third period. In the fourth quarter, Choi and Hopkins each added their second goals, and

Nicoletta Tsiamis and

Coco Rigoli scored their first goal of the game to lock up the 19-6 victory.

Avery Song led the team with four goals and added two assists, and

Charlotte Semlies added a hat trick with three goals in the win.

Nicoletta Tsiamis also added a team-high three assists.

Peyton McGuire led the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, and

Grace Harrell also added a team-high three ground balls.

Wynne Boggan and

Kaylin Oey led the team with four draw controls, and Boggan joined McGuire with a team-high three caused turnovers. In goal,

Lily Brill made four saves and allowed three goals in the first half, and

Gabrielle Kiewe and

Kate Snyder also made two saves in one quarter of action each.

With the win, the Maroons improve to 5-3 on the season. UChicago returns to action next weekend with games on back-to-back days at Stagg Field as the Maroons host #1 Middlebury on Tuesday afternoon and Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday night.
