Four Men's Swimmers Earn CSC Academic All-District Team Selection

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago men's swimming & diving team placed four student-athletes on the CSC Academic All-District Team, as released by College Sports Communicators on Tuesday afternoon. The four student-athletes earning Academic All-District honors include John Butler, Cooper Costello, Ryan Lobo, and Alex Schwartz.

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago men's swimming & diving team placed four student-athletes on the CSC Academic All-District Team, as released by College Sports Communicators on Tuesday afternoon. The four student-athletes earning Academic All-District honors include

John Butler,

Cooper Costello,

Ryan Lobo, and

Alex Schwartz.

John Butler added an Academic All-District selection after earning seven 1st-Team All-America awards and winning a pair of National Championships. The Cedar Falls, Iowa native also won six UAA titles en route to being named the UAA Men's Swimmer of the Year. The sophomore economics and cognitive science double major enters his junior season as a 10-time All-American and a 4-time National Champion, and he holds the UChicago school record in five different events, including the 50 Free, 200 Free, 400 Free Relay, 800 Free Relay, and 400 Medley Relay.

Cooper Costello earned his spot on the Academic All-District team after winning five National Championships at the 2026 National Championship meet, sweeping his three individual events with titles in the 100 Fly, 200 Fly, and 200 IM. The Goleta, California native earned 1st-Team All-America honors in all seven of his events this season, and he won six UAA titles en route to being named the UAA Men's Swimmer of the Year. The junior chemistry and french double major wraps up his junior season as an 8-time National Champion and a 15-time All-American, and he holds the school record in 100 Free, 100 Fly, 200 Fly, 200 IM, 400 Free Relay, 800 Free Relay, and 400 Medley Relay. Costello will look to join Jesse Ssengonzi and Garrett Clasen as the lone Maroons to earn multiple Academic All-America selections in their career, and with a 1st-Team selection, he would be the first UChicago swimmer and just the third athlete in UChicago history, joining Nicholas D'Ambrose and Paul Haar, to earn multiple 1st-Team Academic All-America selections.

Ryan Lobo brings home an Academic All-District selection after winning his first-ever National Championship in the 400 Free Relay this season. The Melbourne, Australia native won both the DIII National Championship and the UAA Championship in the 400 Free Relay to earn his first-career All-America honor and his first All-UAA award. The senior economics and computer science major is also minoring in data science, and he is a Neubauer Scholar, a Booth Mercer Scholar, and a member of the Derivatives of Data Science and the Professional Technology Fraternity of Kappa Theta Pi.

Alex Schwartz earned Academic All-District honors after winning his second career National Championship this season in the 400 Free Relay. The Southlake, Texas native brought home three total 1st-Team All-America awards, including finishing 2nd in the 800 Free Relay and 4th in the 500 Free. He also won the UAA Championship in the 800 Free Relay and earned All-UAA honors in the 500 Free. In his career, the sophomore economics and political science double major has won a pair of National Championships and earned four 1st-Team All-America awards. Schwartz also holds the school record in the 500 Free, 400 IM, 400 Free Relay, and 800 Free Relay.

The UChicago men's swimming & diving team brought home its third consecutive third-place finish in the National Championships meet this season. The Maroons tallied five National Championships and earned 14 1st-Team All-America and five 2nd-Team All-America honors in the meet.

CSC Academic All-District Team honorees are selected by the national organization based on combined academic and athletic performance. Nominees must have a GPA above 3.50 in at least their sophomore year and have competed in 75% of competitions, finished top-eight in their conference championships meet, or participate in the 2026 NCAA Division III National Championships. All four UChicago swimmers will advance to the Academic All-America ballot, which will be voted on by sports information directors nationwide. The 2026 Academic All-America Team will be announced on Wednesday, April 29.
