200 Freestyle Takes First, Costello Breaks His Own DIII Record on Day Two in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS -- The 4th-ranked University of Chicago men's swimming & diving team had a great second day at the 2026 National Championships. The Maroons took home two national championships and one top-3 finish in their events.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The 4th-ranked University of Chicago men's swimming & diving team had a great second day at the 2026 National Championships. The Maroons took home two national championships and one top-3 finish in their events.

The 200 Freestyle Relay team of

Cooper Costello,

Rylan Kruep,

Igor Benderskii, and

John Butler edged out their competition by just .06 milliseconds to capture the Maroons' second title of the night. Butler secured the win by swimming the team's fastest time at the anchor with a 19.19 in his individual 200.

Cooper Costello won the Maroons' lone individual National Championship of the night, defending his title in the 100 butterfly with a time of 45.85, breaking his own NCAA record from last year's title.

After finishing third in the 200 freestyle at last year's championships,

John Butler recorded a second-place finish with a time of 1:35.01.

Heading into day three of the championships, the Maroons sit in second place in the overall standings. Prelims begin at 10 a.m., and finals start at 6 p.m. tomorrow.
