Costello Wins Maroons First National Championship of the Meet, Maroons Break Four School Records
INDIANAPOLIS -- The 4th-ranked University of Chicago men's swimming & diving team finished out day one of the 2026 National Championships on Wednesday night. The Maroons captured their first individual national championship, recorded three top-3 event finishes, and broke four school records.

Cooper Costello won the Maroons' lone National Championship of the night, taking home a first-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:45.13, defeating his opponents by just over 20 milliseconds.
The 400 Medley Relay team of
Ethan Taylor, Costello, and Butler earned a place at the podium with a second-place finish and a time of 3:09.94, breaking the UChicago school record.
UChicago's 50 freestyle record was also broken as
John Butler recorded a third-place finish with a time of 19.64.
In the 500 freestyle,
Alex Schwartz brought home a fourth-place finish for the Maroons. In the consolation finals,
Gray Spencer finished in ninth.
Danyal Ghadiali finished in 15th place in his first-ever event at the championships in 3M diving.
The Maroons look to add to their trophy case tomorrow for day two of the 2026 NCAA Championships.
