The Case Western Reserve University softball team suffered a pair of losses to Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon at Mather Park in Cleveland.

The Spartans fell to 20-12 this season and 8-6 in University Athletic Association contests, while the Judges improved to 20-16 and 7-7 in UAA games.

Prior to the first game, CWRU celebrated its three graduating members: seniors Elizabeth Berry, Tara Fritscher, and Devanghi Misra

Stats and Standouts

  • Junior infielder Karen Potts went five-for-seven with a pair of home runs and six runs batted in across the two games

  • Junior infielder Kaelyn Zusi had extra-base hits in each game

  • Sophomore outfielder Ashley Miller and junior outfielder Nylah Durham each had a hit in both games

Game 1: Brandeis 8, CWRU 4

  • Before the suspension on Friday afternoon, Potts drove in a pair of runs with a single in the second inning

  • Play resumed on Saturday in the top of the third inning

  • Brandeis claimed a 3-2 lead with a home run in the frame

  • Potts evened the score with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning

  • The Judges took the lead on a bases loaded walk in the sixth and scored four more times to take an 8-3 edge

  • Zusi doubled home a run in the final frame, but the CWRU rally fell short

Game 2: Brandeis 21, CWRU 5 (6 inn.)

  • The Judges scored eight runs in the first two innings to take an early 8-0 lead

  • Zusi led off the second frame with a home run to cut into the deficit

  • The visitors responded with back-to-back hits in the third, making the score 9-1

  • Potts drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, dropping the deficit to six

  • A sacrifice fly by first-year catcher Sophia Becker made the score 9-4, and Potts hit her second homer of the day to bring the Spartans closer

  • Brandeis scored 12 times in the sixth inning

Spartan Notes

  • The Spartans fell to 34-30 all-time against the Judges with the losses snapping a 12-game winning streak for CWRU in the series

  • Potts has now reached base in her last 19 games. The homers were her eighth and ninth of the season and the 18th and 19th of her career

  • CWRU dropped to 3-5 at home this season
