Big First Quarter Propels Men’s Lacrosse to 19-7 Win Over Coast Guard
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT generated six unanswered goals in the first quarter before going on to defeat the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 19-7, in NEWMAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Garrett Campagna generated three goals and four assists for the Engineers, becoming the fifth player in program history to eclipse 200 career points. Patrick Smith led the Bears with a hat trick.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Following a defensive battle to start the game, MIT rattled off six goals during the final 6:17 of the first quarter. Riley Pierce put the Engineers on the scoreboard courtesy of a pass from Oscar Lindenthal and then CJ Sanchez connected on a feed from Hayden Calabretta. Zach Bleil followed with an unassisted goal as Lindenthal scored his second goal of the day on a pass from Collin Lung. Kaden Fenno won the ensuing faceoff and went directly to net while Pierce notched the last goal of the frame.

MIT continued to control the action in the second quarter as it outscored Coast Guard, 6-3, for a 12-3 advantage. Campagna was a factor in five of the Engineers goals as he had a hat trick and earned assists on a pair of blasts by Pierce. Ezekiel Christian put the Bears on the scoreboard at the 12:50 mark while Smith and Liam Miller produced back-to-back goals for the visitors.

Eric Key redirected a feed from Noah Heller just 58 seconds into the third quarter; however, MIT replied with three consecutive goals. Bleil started the burst with an unassisted goal while Calabretta and Pierce followed with man-up goals. Coast Guard countered with a Mason Tucker blast and a man-up goal by Smith that was set up by Davis Lee with 7:08 on the clock. Over four minutes later, CJ Sanchez increased the Engineers' lead to 16-6.

Smith completed the hat trick 1:17 into the fourth quarter, but MIT responded with goals from Lindenthal, Sanchez, and Thomas Ludecke to wrap up the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Pierce compiled five goals, one assist, and five groundballs while Lindenthal and Calabretta both finished with two goals and two assists.

Sanchez notched three goals and one assist.

Fenno won nine of 14 faceoff attempts and collected seven groundballs while Mason Prettyman had a 10-of-15 faceoff performance and scooped up four groundballs.

Lung made six saves in 45 minutes as AJ Sachwitz posted a caused turnover while in net during the fourth quarter.

James Wildt recorded three groundballs and two caused turnovers as Tucker won four faceoffs and registered three groundballs.

Dustin Miller made six saves in the first half while Brett Tobasky and Elijah Hinson both turned away five shots during the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
