Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Springfield, 11-10, in Double Overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The MIT men's lacrosse team lost to NEWMAC rival Springfield College, 11-10, in double overtime on Sunday afternoon.

Garrett Campagna tallied one goal, four assists, and four groundballs for the Engineers.

THE BASICS:

• Score: Springfield 11, MIT 10 (2OT)

• Records: MIT (5-5 Overall, 2-1 NEWMAC); Springfield (6-4 Overall, 2-1 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Zach Bleil opened the scoring after 1:08 elapsed on pass from Oscar Lindenthal, but Springfield recorded back-to-back goals to take the lead. MIT replied with goals from Denley Kofoed, James Lukish, and Riley Pierce to go back in front.

• Hayden Calabretta increased the Engineers' margin to 5-2 almost five minutes into the second quarter. Following five minutes of scoreless play, Campagna set up back-to-back man-up goals that were scored by Pierce and Bleil. The Pride ended their scoring drought with 52 seconds remaining before halftime, trimming its deficit to 7-3.

• Campagna was a factor in MIT's three goals during the third quarter. He scored on a pass from Pierce just 1:29 into the frame and then he earned an assist on a blast by Bleil at the 8:21 mark. Following a Springfield goal, Bleil redirected a feed from Campagna for a man-up goal with 4:51 on the clock. The Pride responded with three unanswered goals, narrowing the gap to 10-7 at the end of the period.

• A defensive battle ensued until Springfield broke through with 5:02 left to play. The Pride then found the back of the net with 35 and six seconds on the clock, forcing overtime.

• In the first extra session, the Engineers generated three shots, but they were off the mark. Collin Lung, meanwhile, made three saves while facing five shots by Springfield.

• In double overtime, a shot by Bleil was wide while an attempt from Campagna was saved. In transition, the Pride produced the game winner with 2:30 on the clock.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Bleil totaled four goals as Pierce posted two goals and an assist.

• Ashton Axe registered five groundballs and one caused turnover while Lukish collected three groundballs.

• Kaden Fenno was 12-of-17 in faceoffs and notched six groundballs as Mason Prettyman won five of eight faceoff attempts.

• Daniel Patterson had two caused turnovers while Lung ended the day with 16 saves and two groundballs.
