The Amherst College baseball team delivered a remarkable performance in the NESCAC quarterfinals, sweeping Colby College to advance to the championship weekend. In the first game of the series, first-year pitcher Saahi Jetti threw a no-hitter, leading the Mammoths to a 3-0 victory. The following game saw a dramatic finish as pinch-hitter Leo Foust delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, clinching a 3-2 win and securing the series. With this sweep, Amherst improved to 24-12 on the season and will face Trinity College on Friday, May 8, at 5 p.m. in the double-elimination championship format.
In women's softball, the Mammoths concluded their regular season with a challenging doubleheader against Williams College on Senior Day. Despite leading in both games, Amherst fell short, losing 10-3 in nine innings and 6-4. Senior Abby Moravek made a significant impact, hitting a home run and driving in three runs in the second game. The Mammoths finished the season with an overall record of 11-25 and 5-13 in NESCAC play, while honoring seniors Abby Kong, Moravek, Olivia Aitkin, and Dylan Briggs.
The Amherst women's golf team maintained a strong position in the NESCAC Championship, sitting in second place after Day 2 at Taconic Golf Course. The Mammoths are currently +24 over par, trailing Middlebury by just three strokes. Their performance reflects a consistent effort throughout the tournament, and they will look to challenge for the title in the final round.
In track and field, both the men's and women's teams opened the New England Division III Championships with strong showings. The men's team secured key points on Day 1, highlighted by senior Charlie Spurrell's second-place finish in the hammer throw, earning eight points. First-year Manav Bhatia also contributed with a sixth-place finish in the javelin. The women's team featured junior Héloïse Hughes, who clocked a time of 12.04 seconds in the 100-meter dash prelims, positioning herself well for the finals. Both teams are expected to continue their momentum as the championships progress.
Additionally, the men's lacrosse team celebrated two players, Thompson Lau and Matthew Sheinberg, who were named to the All-NESCAC First Team, recognizing their outstanding defensive contributions throughout the season. Lau's performance included 35 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers, while Sheinberg added 13 points through goals and assists. The Mammoths finished their season with an 8-7 record, showcasing a competitive spirit in a challenging conference.
As the championship season unfolds, Amherst's teams are poised for continued success across the board, with the baseball team leading the charge into the postseason.
