The No. 15 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team made headlines this week by breaking the University Athletic Association (UAA) record for stolen bases in a game, achieving 13 steals during a 14-9 victory over Brandeis on April 19. This record-breaking performance followed a doubleheader sweep, after the Bears also won game one 7-5, securing a 3-1 series win against the Judges. In the first game, senior Shane Pellegrino played a pivotal role, contributing to a four-run second inning that set the tone for the Bears. The team’s success comes on the heels of a split in a doubleheader on April 18, where they lost the first game 3-1 but rebounded to win 7-2 in the second.
The No. 8 WashU softball team also enjoyed a successful weekend, completing a series sweep of Brandeis with two victories. On April 19, the Bears won decisively 9-0 in game one, highlighted by a strong performance from first-year Julia Sullo, who not only contributed offensively but also set a new single-season steals record. In the second game of the doubleheader, WashU rallied in the seventh inning to win 4-2, with Sullo again playing a crucial role in the comeback. The Bears now hold a 22-3-1 overall record and are 10-2 in UAA play.
In golf, the No. 7 WashU women’s team concluded its regular season with a third-place finish at the Deb Jackson Invitational in Douglasville, Georgia, on April 19. The Bears posted a two-day score of 606, with senior Athena Nguyen and junior Amy Beanblossom both finishing tied for ninth individually. The NCAA field will be announced on May 11, with the championships scheduled for May 19-22 in Palm Springs, California.
Finally, the No. 9 WashU men's track and field team secured a victory at the Wildcat Invite on April 19, scoring 116 points to outpace second-place Quincy. Notable performances included senior James Corbett winning the 1500m and senior Eli Goldman finishing as the runner-up in the high jump. The Bears continue to build momentum as they approach the postseason.
