Bates baseball ended a four-game losing streak with a commanding 14-2 win over Saint Joseph's on April 14. Junior Henry Prince led the offensive charge, hitting a grand slam and contributing to a seven-run second inning that put the game out of reach early. The Bobcats' offense was relentless, with contributions from junior captain Keagan Ryan and senior Jack Margiloff. However, just a day earlier, Bates fell to the University of Southern Maine 10-5 despite another grand slam from Prince. The team showed resilience, with first-year Joe Williams delivering a solid relief performance. Looking ahead, Bates will seek to build on this momentum in their upcoming games.
In rowing, Bates had a successful weekend, highlighted by the men's team sweeping their opponents during the Malden Racing Series. The men's first varsity eight, led by junior coxswain Darien Chiang and senior captain Luke Desmaison, outpaced Boston College with a time of 7:08.4. The women's team also competed vigorously, gaining valuable experience against top Division III crews. The Bobcats are gearing up to host the Maine State Championship, which will take place at Russell Street Track and Field this weekend.
The Bates women's golf team competed at the Jack Leaman Invitational, where sophomore Isabelle Meltzer led the Bobcats, tying for 48th overall. Meltzer shot an 80 and an 86, showcasing her skills with a birdie on the fifth hole. Junior Mehar Nijjer and senior Kendall Reed also contributed, helping the team to a 12th-place finish. The men's golf team fared well at the Tim Brown Invitational, placing seventh out of 17 schools, with senior captain Henry Ehrlich leading the way with a consistent performance.
In softball, Bates faced a tough weekend against Middlebury, losing both games of a doubleheader. The first game ended in a 1-0 walk-off defeat, with Claire Ballard putting forth a strong pitching effort despite the loss. In the second game, Bates initially took the lead but could not maintain it, falling 7-3. The Bobcats will look to regroup as they prepare for their next matchups.
