Bates women's basketball junior guard Sarah Hughes has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week for the second time this month after a standout performance in the conference quarterfinals. In a dramatic 67-64 overtime victory against Hamilton, Hughes scored 20 of her season-high 23 points in the final 25 minutes, helping the Bobcats overcome a 20-point halftime deficit. She shot 10-of-18 from the field, grabbed nine rebounds, and contributed four assists. This victory propels Bates (22-3) into the NESCAC semifinals, where they will face No. 3 seed Amherst on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
In men's lacrosse, junior Miles Schmidt has been recognized as a member of the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III Team of the Week. Schmidt, a USA Lacrosse Preseason All-America selection, excelled in Bates' opening games against Union and Kean, winning 27 of 44 faceoffs and collecting 16 ground balls. His contributions were pivotal in securing a narrow 14-13 victory over Union and a decisive 15-6 win against Kean. The Bobcats, now 2-0, will continue their season against Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m.
On the baseball front, senior outfielder Gibby Sullivan and junior relief pitcher Theo Zacharia have both earned spots on the D3baseball.com Team of the Week. Sullivan had an impressive start to the season, recording three consecutive multi-hit and multi-RBI games, finishing with a .692 on-base percentage and seven RBIs. Zacharia made his mark by throwing four shutout innings in a comeback win over St. Lawrence, earning his first collegiate victory. Their performances helped Bates take two of three games from St. Lawrence to open the season.
In women's squash, the No. 24 Bobcats concluded their regular season with an 8-1 loss to No. 21 St. Lawrence. The team's sole victory came from sophomore captain Scarlett Hine, who won her match at the No. 3 position. Meanwhile, the men's squash team, ranked No. 25, also faced St. Lawrence, with captain Dennis Welte clinching his fifth consecutive victory in a come-from-behind match. Both squash teams will now await their seeding for the CSA Divisional Team Championships, set for next weekend in Philadelphia.
