Case Western Reserve University’s wrestling team secured a notable achievement this week, qualifying three wrestlers for the national championship following strong performances at the NCAA Region V Tournament. Seniors Art Martinez (133 lbs.) and Thomas Wagner (157 lbs.), along with junior Mathew Gummere (197 lbs.), each finished third in their respective weight classes, marking the first time in 12 years that Spartans have qualified for the national meet. This accomplishment also signifies the first instance since 2003 that at least three wrestlers from the program have advanced to the championship. Head Coach David Shapiro was recognized as the NWCA Division III Region V Coach of the Year, a testament to his leadership as the team achieved a 22-13 dual meet record this season, including an 11-4 mark.
In women's basketball, junior guard Mya Hartjes, senior guard/forward Emily Plachta, and junior forward Maura Schorr received All-University Athletic Association honors for their performances throughout the season. Hartjes earned a spot on the All-UAA First Team, marking her second all-conference recognition, while Plachta was named to the Second Team and Schorr received an honorable mention. Hartjes led the UAA with 99 assists and posted a strong scoring average of 15.6 points per game. Plachta concluded her collegiate career with a standout performance, scoring a career-high 31 points in a 68-59 victory over Carnegie Mellon University, finishing the season averaging 15.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. The women's basketball team ended its season with an overall record of 11-14, tying for sixth place in the UAA with a conference record of 4-10.
