Cooper Costello of the University of Chicago swimming and diving team has made history by being named the Academic All-America Team Member of the Year, a first for the institution. The junior standout from Goleta, California, not only excelled academically but also dominated in the pool, winning five National Championships at the 2026 National Championship meet. Costello swept his three individual events, claiming titles in the 100 Fly, 200 Fly, and 200 IM, while also earning 1st-Team All-America honors in all seven of his events this season. Alongside him, teammates John Butler and Ryan Lobo received 3rd-Team Academic All-America honors, highlighting a remarkable season for the Maroons, who are now looking ahead to next year with high expectations.
In baseball, junior David Flanagan has been recognized for his outstanding performance by earning a spot on the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week for the second consecutive week. His efforts were crucial in leading the Maroons to a four-game sweep against NYU, marking the program's first conference title since 1913 and extending their winning streak to a record-tying 12 games. Flanagan pitched three games this week, retiring all eight batters he faced and securing saves in three of the five victories. The Maroons are set to continue their campaign with a non-conference matchup against Aurora.
The University of Chicago softball team is on a roll, having extended their win streak to five games following a doubleheader sweep against Carthage. In the first game, senior Nicole Wong rebounded from an early challenge to deliver a complete game, allowing only two runs while striking out three. Mia Bocian provided a highlight with a two-run homer that helped secure a 6-2 victory. The Maroons followed up with a 9-6 win in the second game, showcasing their offensive depth and resilience. They will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming contests.
