The Bates baseball team marked a historic achievement this week by sweeping Bowdoin in a doubleheader, the first three-game sweep of the Polar Bears since 2019. In the opener on Saturday, Bates edged Bowdoin 2-1, with sophomore pitcher Charlie Bushley delivering a strong performance, allowing just one unearned run over seven innings. Senior Jack Margiloff provided the game-winning hit. The Bobcats then dominated game two, winning 10-1, with a standout performance from Gibby Sullivan, who contributed significantly to the team's impressive offensive display throughout the series. With these victories, Bates improved to 15-3 overall and 4-2 in NESCAC East, returning to action on Wednesday against Husson.
In men's lacrosse, the No. 15 Bobcats secured a 17-13 victory over Hamilton, thanks in part to a six-goal third quarter that helped them pull away from a tightly contested match. Riley McClure led the way with a remarkable eight-point game, scoring four goals and assisting on four others. This win improved Bates' record to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play. Earlier in the week, Bates faced a tough challenge against No. 2 Bowdoin, ultimately falling 13-10 despite a strong start that saw them lead 4-1 at one point.
The Bates women's lacrosse team also enjoyed a successful week, highlighted by a thrilling 12-11 Senior Day victory over Hamilton. Senior Caroline Keating scored the decisive goal with just 12 seconds left, securing the win for the Bobcats, who improved to 6-6 overall and 2-5 in NESCAC play. Earlier in the week, Bates achieved its first NESCAC victory of the season with a 13-12 overtime win against Bowdoin, where Lauren Wong scored the game-winner.
In rowing, both the men's and women's teams opened their spring season on the Charles River, facing challenging conditions. The women's third varsity eight secured a victory, while the men’s first varsity eight finished second to MIT Lightweights. The teams will compete again next Saturday against Tufts, Wesleyan, Boston College, and Wellesley.
The Bates women's track and field team shone at the Amherst Spring Fling, with junior Anushka Chavda and first-year Charlotte Everhart achieving top finishes in their respective events. Chavda's time in the 100-meter dash ranks second on the Bates all-time list. The men's track and field team also participated, with junior Evan Berthiaume earning a personal record in the 100-meter dash, placing him fourth on the all-time list. Both teams will look to build on their performances in upcoming meets.
